Rupees 3 lakhs monetary relief in a case of death in prison in Bihar
(Case No. 3874/4/2004-2005-CD)

An undertrial prisoner Dev Narayan Mondal died in the District Jail, Madhubani, Bihar on the 4th February, 2005. Intimation regarding his death in custody was received from the Jail Superintendent. On consideration of the reports and the material on record, the Commission found that his death was caused due to disease. However, it was also observed that despite being referred by the medical officer in the jail for better medical care, the jail administration delayed action, resulting in his death. The Government of Bihar in response to Commission's notice said that it had no objection to the grant of monetary relief to the next of kin of the deceased. Therefore, on the 27th July, 2010, the Commission recommended rupees 3 lakhs as monetary relief to the next of kin of the deceased.
