Rupees 5 lakhs monetary relief in a case of death in police custody in Assam

A minor quarrel amongst the children of two families led to a scuffle between the elders of the families on the 20th September, 2007. Both parties suffered injuries and cross FIRs were registered at police station Katigorah, Assam. However, Motahir Ali of one of the families was arrested on the 20th September, 2007 despite being injured. Next day he died in police custody. On consideration of the reports and the material on record, the Commission found that Motahir Ali, a poor labourer, became a victim of police torture and recommended that the Government of Assam pay rupees 5 lakhs as monetary relief to the next of kin of the deceased.
