Rupees five lakh monetary relief in a case of death in firing by a police constable in Uttar Pradesh

The 20th Battalion of Provincial Armed Constabulary, PAC had deployed some of its personnel for the security in the Kashi Vishwanath temple complex in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. On the 20th February, 2005, suddenly, Constable Ram Dhyan Prajapati lost his cool and opened indiscriminate fire at his colleagues, deployed there; killing three of them and injuring three others. Sunil Kumar Bharadwaj, a flower vendor at the temple complex, also became a victim of the indiscriminate firing and lost his life. His father Munni Lal filed a complaint in the Commission. On consideration of reports in the matter, the Commission found that Sunil Kumar was the only earning member of his poor family, and recommended payment of Rupees five lakh to next of his kin. The Commission also asked the Government of Uttar Pradesh to inform whether the families of the slain police personnel and the injured have been paid ex-gratia or not.
