Rupees five lakhs monetary relief in a case of death in police custody in Delhi

Mahinder son of Nanak Chand resident of Madipur, Delhi died in police custody on the 16th September, 2006. Additional District Magistrate, District West, New Delhi gave an intimation to the Commission regarding the incident. The police claimed that it was a case of suicide. On consideration of magisterial enquiry report, the Commission observed that this is a case of abetment to suicide and wrongful confinement. Mahinder was shocked due to threat of being implicated in a false case under Arms Act and set himself on fire. The Commission recommended that the Delhi Government pay a sum of rupees five lakhs to the next of kin of the deceased.
