Rupees five lakhs monetary relief in a case of victimization of a journalist in Uttar Pradesh
(Case No. 14303/24/2006-2007)
Samiuddin @ Neelu, a reporter with Hindi Daily, Amar Ujala, while exercising his right of freedom of expression was victimized by the police officials of district Lakhimpur Khiri, Uttar Pradesh. In its proceedings on the 4th February, 2010, including previous complaints since 2006, the Commission observed that "this case is a stark example of not only of total apathy, but outright antagonism towards a person, whose right to life was seriously endangered" by the misuse of authority by the then Superintendent of Police of Lakhimpur Khiri,
Ms. N. Padmja and others on her behalf. He was implicated in a false case in which he was arrested and had to stay in prison. That his life was also in danger is evident from the fact that the state police had extended him security from the 4th April , 2006 to the 15th May, 2007.
In view of the extra ordinary facts of this case, the Commission observed that Samiuddin fought his battle several years suffering mental, physical and financial agony, and recommended that the Uttar Pradesh Government pay Rs. 5 lakhs as monetary relief to him.
