Rupees one lakh as monetary relief in a case of death in Police custody in Bihar

Mukhi Chowdhary, son of Roopa Chowdhary, was arrested on the 27th August, 2003 in a case of theft registered at Manjhagarh, District Gopal Ganj, Bihar. He became unwell on the same day, and was taken to the hospital, but he could not be saved. The post-mortem and viscera report confirmed that Mukhi died due to consumption of poison. The Commission observed that negligence of police officials led to this incident, and recommended that the Government of Bihar pay Rupees one lakh as monetary relief to the next of kin of deceased.
