Rupees one lakh as monetary relief in a case of death in police custody in Chhattisgarh
(Case No. 377/33/2002-2003-AD)

Santoshi Dhiver, the priest of Manka Mai temple in village Khokhara, was taken to police station, Jangir in Jharkhand on the 21st January, 2003 for interrogation in a case of theft. Two days later his body was found lying in the fields of the village. On the analysis of viscera, it was found that he died due to consumption of insecticide.
On inquiry, the Commission observed that no entry had been made in the records of the police station when Santoshi was brought there for interrogation. There was prima facie evidence to show that the Santoshi's detention was illegal and everything about his death appeared fishy. Therefore, the Commission recommended that the Government of Chhattisgarh pay Rupees one lakh as monetary relief to the next of the deceased's kin and also asked for a compliance report.
