Akhilesh was lodged in District Jail, Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh on the 16th January, 2005 as an under trial prisoner in a murder case. He committed suicide by hanging himself on the 9th June, 2007 in the jail premises. On consideration of the post-mortem and magisterial inquiry reports, the Commission observed that the negligence of jail staff led to this incident and recommended that the Government of Uttar Pradesh pay rupees one lakh as monetary relief to the next of kin of the deceased.
