Seminar on Human Rights Awareness
A two - day Seminar on "Human Rights Awareness" was organized at " Assam Administrative Staff College, Guwahati on November 28 and 29, 2006. Speaking at the Seminar, Shri P.C. Sharma, Member, NHRC highlighted that in a State like Assam where the impact of militancy is evident on all aspects of lives of the people, what is needed is to give voice to human sufferings. He said that the vast resources of the State, which should have been deployed to reduce human misery, are to be diverted to tackle the conflict situation. The Member said a three dimensional approach can yield tangible result to educate the people of the State on human rights. They are Knowledge - Provision of information about human rights and mechanism for their protection, Values, beliefs and attitudes - Promotion of human rights culture. Action - Encouragement to take prompt and firm action to defend human rights abuses.
Shri Sharma said that no human right programme would be complete and enjoy validity if it does not reach out to the impoverished masses and the dispossessed.He said only a proactive approach can give voice to the aspirations of the masses. He expressed the hope that with the setting up of institutions like Assam State Human Rights Commission, the issues relating to the backward and the excluded will be addressed with sensitivity, compassion and care.
