Sensitization programme for Human Rights Defenders in Odisha

Mr. A.K. Parashar, Joint Registrar (Law) represented the National Human Rights Commission at a workshop for human rights defenders organized by an NGO confederation, 'The Human Rights Front' in Bhubaneswar, Odisha on the 21st March, 2012.
Addressing the workshop, Mr. A.K. Parashar, who is also the NHRC's Focal Point for Human Rights Defenders, spoke about the role, function and challenges of the Commission and appealed to the human rights defenders to help increase its reach to as many people as possible. He said that the Commission considers human rights defenders its eyes and ears. Such interactive workshops should be organized as often as possible at different places so that issues concerning human rights defenders could be brought to the notice of the Commission.
The workshop was also addressed by Mrs. Jyoti Panigrahi, Chairperson State Commission for Women, Mrs. Namrata Chadha, former member State Commission for Women, Dr. Bimalendu Mohanty, former Vice-Chancellor and Chairman, Transparency International India-Odisha Chapter, eminent Sarvodaya Leader, Mrs. Krishna Mohanty and Mr. Manoj Jena, Convener, Human Rights Front.
Some of the prominent human rights defenders from the State of Odisha, including Mr. Baghambar Pattnaik, member of the NHRC's Core-Group of NGOs, Mr. Dhirendra Panda, Mr. Nicholas Barla and Dr. Raghunath Pattnaik, Dean SOA Institute of Law also spoke at the workshop.
