Sensitization Workshop on Bonded Labour
The National Human Rights Commission received complaints related to bonded Labour and nonpayment of their wages in the Meerut Division of Uttar Pradesh. The reports submitted by the State Government were examined in the Commission. While considering the reports, the Commission decided to convene a sensitization Workshop on Bonded Labour for the Divisional Commissioner, District Magistrates, SDMs and other Senior Officers of Labour Department of Meerut Division.
Following this, NHRC convened a Workshop on June 19, 2008 under the Chairmanship of Shri P C Sharma, Member, NHRC. Dr. L Mishra, Special Rapporteur, Dr. Sanjay Dubey,Director (Admin.), NHRC, Shri Anil Swarup, Director General (Labour Welfare) from Ministry of Labour and Divisional Commissioners, District Magistrates, SDMS and officers of Meerut Zone, leaders of brick kiln owner and labour also attended the Workshop. The Workshop was very helpful in establishing conceptual and definitional clarity as also about the strategy and methodology of identification, release and rehabilitation of bonded labourers especially in brick kilns.
