Six patients died as doctors paralyzed healthcare in a Gorakhpur Medical College in UP: NHRC issues notices to the concerned State authorities

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report alleging that medical services in Baba Raghav Das Medical College, Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh were completely paralyzed by unruly junior doctors resulting in death of six patients. The Commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise the serious issue of violation of human rights of Right to Health of the patients.
Notices have been issued to the Secretary, Department of Medical Education, Government of Uttar Pradesh and District Magistrate, Gorakhpur to submit a report in the matter within two weeks.
Allegedly, following the death of a patient, heated arguments ensued between his family members and some junior doctors of the hospital. The doctors thrashed the relatives of the patient. When media persons tried to record the statement of the family members of the patient with their photographs, the junior doctors gave beatings to them also. Subsequently, medical services in the Medical College were completely paralyzed. Reportedly, the rampant junior doctors stopped the main supply of oxygen resulting in the death of six patients.
