Srinagar school children's death by electrocution, NHRC calls for report

The manner in which 2 students died as a result of a live wire falling on a school in Srinagar, reported in the media on 19 October 2004 has prompted the National Human Rights Commission to call for a factual report from the Chief Secretary, Government of Jammu & Kashmir.
The report is to be sent within 4 weeks. The news item stated that two students were killed and six critically injured when a live wire fell on the roof of a school building at Shariefabad, near Zainakote, Srinagar. This news story reported caused panic among the 41 students who were taking the final term examination at that point of time. While rushing out in a state of panic, two students, namely, Tanvir Ahmad, a Kindergarten student and Mohammad Maqbool studying in third standard came in contact with the live wire and got electrocuted. Six others suffered severe burn injuries and were hospitalized, it was reported. The news item also stated that after the incident the residents of the area staged violent protests against the Power Development Department.
