Summer Internship Programme: 2001
Since 1998, the Commission has been organizing a summer internship programme to expose talented students both from India and abroad to the work of the Commission. This year, too, a summer internship programme was organized from 14 May 2001 to 12 June 2001. There were, in all, a total of 14 students from various universities in the States of Chhatisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, West Bengal and Assam, pursuing their graduate and post-graduate studies either in law, political science, sociology or criminology.
During the course of the programme this year, the interns were given an orientation in regard to the functioning of the NHRC, and broad questions of human rights in India, including the rights of special categories of persons, and issue relating to civil society and human rights. The interns were also introduced to the main international instruments on human rights and the major decisions of the superior courts of the country. They were taken on visits to Tihar Jail, the PRAYAS Observation Home and the Centre of Concern for Child Labour. In addition, they were given independent assignments to work on, as part of the Summer Internship Programme, which they successfully completed by the end of their internships.
