Summer Internship Programme-2012 concludes
A month-long Summer Internship Programme-2012 of the Commission concluded on the 3rd June, 2012. Addressing the valedictory session, Mr. Justice K. G. Balakrishnan, Chairperson, NHRC said that human rights are being exploited by rich and powerful people and this is the biggest challenge before society. However, the significance of human rights will never diminish; it will grow with their ever expanding dimension and legal sanctity accorded to them.
Congratulating 49 interns on successful completion of their training in human rights and related laws, he hoped that they would make use of this knowledge in promotion and protection of these rights.
Sanchit Singh of National Law Institute University, Bhopal and Shikha from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai stood first and second respectively. Four interns Bhartendu Agarwal, National Law Institute, Jodhpur, Ritam Arora, Amity University Lucknow, Asha P. Soman, School of Legal Studies, Kochi University of Science and Technology and Arjun Krishna, National Law Institute University, Bhopal shared the third position.
NHRC Chairperson also honoured Mrs. Neelam, Ranchi College, Ranchi with a special award for her courage in resuming higher studies after having spent substantial time as a house-wife.
Mr. J.S. Kochher, Joint Secretary, NHRC said that in addition to building awareness on human rights, this programme is also serving the purpose of national integration as its participants come from different parts of the country. He hoped that the interns will carry with them the values of unity, national integration and respect for human rights. The 49 interns, including 29 females and 20 males, came from 13 States and Union Territories of India. Amina Bibi was the first time intern to have come from the Andaman & Nicobar islands.
