Suo motu cognizance of media reports on missing children from East Delhi
There were reports in the media that on the 10th February this year, six children went missing on their way to Sarvodaya Vidyalaya School, Vishwas Nagar, East Delhi, and that the number of missing children in East Delhi had increased significantly. At least fifteen children, including three from a single family, were untraceable. These children were from poor families and their parents, who were rickshaw pullers or workers on daily wages, had run from pillar to post for months without getting any help in tracing them.
The Commission took suo motu cognizance on 24/2/2009, observing that this was a serious violation of the human rights of children. A notice was issued to the Delhi Police Commissioner, calling for a report within four weeks.
