Sustained work for gender equity needed for women empowerment: Shri P.C. Sharma
Shri P.C. Sharma, Member, NHRC has said that women's subordination is a result of interplay of complex socioeconomic and political forces and a sustained effort for gender equity in several spheres is needed for the empowerment of women. Delivering the key note address at the debate competition organized by Haryana Police on "Human Rights - Dowry Victims" held at Panipat on 10 May 2005, Shri Sharma said that society has to learn to respect the dignity and worth of women.
He said that the NHRC remains deeply concerned about the issue of domestic violence against women. The Commission has examined the Draft of the Protection from the Domestic Violence Bill 2000 and has sent its detailed suggestions to the Government with a view to make the Bill comprehensive and effective. The matter is being pursued with the Government.
