Sweeper allegedly chops off baby's finger at Barmer Govt. hospital: NHRC notices to Rajasthan Health Secretary and District S.P.
New Delhi, 22nd April, 2013
The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that a one year child lost a finger in his right hand when a sweeper tried to remove a device inserted in his wrist for administering intravenous fluids at a Govt. Hospital in Barmer, Rajasthan.
Issuing notices to the Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of Rajasthan and the SP, District Barmer, returnable in four weeks, the Commission has observed that the contents of press report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights on account of negligence of the public servant in discharge of their duties.
Reportedly, the ward sweeper was acting on the orders of a male nurse. After initial efforts to take out the intra-cath device proved futile, he picked up a pair of scissors to take the adhesive tapes off. While trying to do so, the child's finger got chopped off.
