Torture in police custody in Kerala


The National Human Rights Commission, in a case of torture of a house maid by police in Cheranallur Police Station, Ernakulam, Kerala, has issued a show cause notice to the Chief Secretary, Government of Kerala why an interim relief of ` three lakh be not recommended to be paid to the victim. During the course of enquiry, it was revealed that the maid was kept in detention for 38 hours on the complaint by her employer for a theft. She suffered serious spinal injuries in police torture. Six police personnel were suspended and a criminal case was registered against them.
