Training Programme for Trainers on Disability

The National Human rights commission is organizing a major training programme for trainers on the rights of the disabled at the National Law School of India University, Bangalore from 5th -10th July 2004.The 6 day programme will focus on international and national laws and their application to the human rights of persons with disability. It is being organized by the Commission in collaboration with the Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) and the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) as part of a project to promote the human rights of persons with disabilities.
Justice Smt. Sujata V Manohar, Member, National Human Rights Commission of India will inaugurate the programme on July 5.
The project seeks to systematically incorporate education, knowledge and awareness about international and domestic human rights instruments and procedures aimed at protecting rights of persons with disabilities.
This programme will be conducted in four phases. Phase I includes face-to-face training in a participatory mode by a distinguished panel of experts from Indian and foreign universities. In Phase II, the participants would work on individual projects. Phase III includes a national seminar in which they are to present the findings of their projects. In Phase IV, the participants would organize and facilitate training programmes for local NGOs and disability rights activists.
The ultimate objective is to incorporate a disability rights perspective in the education of lawyers, judges and social workers. This would ensure the building up of a cadre of disability sensitive professionals and activists.
