Training workshops for Judicial Officers

Two training workshops for judicial officers were organized in the month of March. One at Jodhpur from 11-13 March 2005 and the other in Delhi from 19-20 March 2005 both of which were inaugurated by Dr. Justice Shivaraj V. Patil, Member, NHRC.
The workshop at Jodhpur was held in collaboration with the National Law University, Jodhpur and aimed at sensitizing the participants to human rights issues. The Delhi workshop was held in collaboration with Socio-Legal Information Centre with the theme being 'Child Sexual Abuse'. Addressing the participants of the training workshop held at Delhi, Justice Patil emphasized that adults cannot barter away the future of the children. There must be a conscious and continuous effort by all concerned to protect children against any kind of abuse, harassment or exploitation as well as care be taken of them to ensure wholesome development of their personality, he said. Justice Patil further said that he believed that deeper sensitivity and intensive interest on the part of the Judges could have great impact on the decision making in cases relating to Child Sexual Abuse, thus, relieving or minimizing the trauma of the victims. He regretted that at present there are no laws that specifically deal with child sexual abuse cases, although there can be no crime committed that is worse than those of sexual offences against children.
