Dr. Richard Bennett, Representative of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal (UNOHCHR) called on the Secretary General, NHRC, Mr. A.K. Jain in 16th January, 2009. Mr. Sunil Krishna, Director General (Investigation), Mrs. Aruna Sharma, Joint Secretary (P&A), Mr. Y.S.R. Murthy, Director (Research) were also present on the occasion. Mr. Bennett explained the activities of the UN Mission in Nepal and related human right issues. He suggested that NHRC, India may assist in Capacity Building of Nepal Human Rights Commission being a leading National Institution in the region. Secretary General informed that NHRC will be glad to offer any such assistance. For this, request may directly be sent by NHRI Nepal or OHCHR may also recommend the same to NHRC, India. He also advised that the UN Representative may even recommend UN funding for the purpose. The issue of trafficking in women and children came up for discussion in particular as a common problem affecting both the countries. It was explained to Mr. Bennett that the Commission's expertise in monitoring human rights in prisons, mental hospitals, elimination of bonded labour and child labour could be shared with others. It was pointed out that the Commission's Complaint Management System has already been installed in NHRC-Nepal.
