Ms. Gay McDougall, United Nations' Independent Expert on Minority Issues came to NHRC on an informal visit on the 21st December, 2010. She was accompanied by Graham Fox, Human Rights Officer, Mandate of the Independent Expert on Minority Issues, Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, OHCHR. In a meeting with Mr. Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, Chairperson, Members and senior officers of the Commission, she was informed on the social fabric of India ;economic and social rights of minorities and related Constitutional provisions safe guarding their interests ; the law prohibiting manual scavenging; mandate of NHRC; its activities and enforcement mechanism for its recommendations.
