Mr. Shuaib Chalklen, UN Special Rapporteur on Disability Commission for Social Development, prior to the seminar on the rights of persons with disabilities in the Commonwealth, visited the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, on the 13th January, 2011 for a meeting with Mr. K.S. Money, Secretary General. The meeting was also attended by Mr. P.K. Pincha, Special Rapporteur, Disability, NHRC. Mr. Money informed Mr. Chalklen that the Commission has been actively engaged with the Government to ensure that disability specific laws and mainstream laws, which affect the rights of the persons with disabilities are harmonized with the UN Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities (UNCRPD).
Mr. Chalklen was also informed about the structure, functioning and complaint management system of NHRC in addition to various recommendations and guidelines issued by it towards the protection and promotion of human rights.
