Unhygienic conditions in Delhi hospitals; NHRC calls for report
New Delhi, 13 October 2004
The deplorable unhygienic conditions in two of Delhi's hospitals, the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital and the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narain Hospital as reported in the media on 20 September 2004 has prompted the National Human Rights Commission to take suo-motu cognizance. It has directed that copies of the news stories be forwarded to the Secretary, Health, Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi and the Medical Superintendents of both hospitals for their comments and report within three weeks.
The news story on North Delhi's Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital stated that it is in a bad shape. It reported that although more than 2000 patients visit the hospital everyday for treatment, yet everything from its security to hygiene is in desperate need of overhaul. Besides stray dogs, loitering in the hospital premises, dirty water tanks, leaking taps, open sewer provide overpowering foul smell, it said. Apart from security, infrastructure is a major problem at the hospital. A similar report in respect of the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narain Hospital indicated dumping of garbage in the premises of the hospital, which it stated is both a nuisance and health hazard for residents and patients alike.
