We Celebrated

The National Human Rights Commission completed 13 years of its existence on October 12th, 2006. For the first time, as a part of Foundation Day Celebrations, the Commission held a function at FICCI, Tansen Marg, New Delhi on October 12, 2006 where Dr. Mohammad El Said El Dakkak, Member, National Council for Human Rights, Egypt was the chief guest. In his speech Dr. Dakkak, expressed unhappiness that the respect and violation of Human rights are often used to serve political and geo-political purposes. He said time has come for a serious and sincere dialogue to create a culture of human rights and for this all those institutions, governmental and non-governmental that transform the intellectual discourses into action in the societies are to be promoted. He said it is the responsibility of institutions like NHRC and the council of Egypt to promote such a process and then only culture of Human rights will become common heritage of humanity.
In his presidential address NHRC chairperson Dr. Justice A.S.Anand said that the Commission has maintained that the main obligation to protect human rights is that of the State itself. He said the Commission acts as a facilitator and there are numerous challenges, which we have to meet. He pointed out that poverty, neglect of social, economic and cultural right, corruptions are some of the biggest violators of human rights. He said the present day terrorism has cast a pall on efforts to promote and protect human rights. He highlighted that trafficking of women and children is another jolt to any effort to improve the human rights situation. He also referred to the custodial violation and administration of criminal justice system.
Dr. Justice Shivaraj V.Patil, Member NHRC and Chairperson Foundation Day organizing committee, in his address highlighted the Commissions activities in different spheres. He traced the 13 years of NHRC and the important cases taken up by the Commission in its journey Dr. Patil said that the Commission has taken up the task of preparing the national action plan for human rights for which draft chapter will be prepared. He also emphasized the spread of human rights awareness, which is important for protection and promotion of human rights.
All the former Chairpersons, Members, Secretary Generals, Director Generals, Registrars, Joint Secretaries and others were special invitees at the function. They were presented with Momento as a token of thanks giving for their contribution to the Commission's endeavor in its fight for human rights.
In the evening the Chief Guest Dr. Mohammad Dakkak unveiled the portraits of Former Chairpersons in the Court Room. The Home Minister Shri Shivraj Patil and the Chief Justice of India, Justice Y.K.Sabharwal also jointed the celebrations on the lawns of the Commission. A special cultural show was organized by the Commission for the distinguished gathering. Mrs. Dakkak joined the cultural evening, where children from SOS village Bawana and the National Association for blind were specially invited to give performance.
On the eve of Foundation Day, i.e. on October 11, 2006 a in-house cultural programme was organized by the staff of the Commission. Group songs, skit, dance and poetry recitation formed a part of the cultural evening. The Commission staff took part in the programme very enthusitically. Prices were distributed for the sports competitions and Hindi fortnight organized earlier.
