Winter Internship 2007

The Winter Internship programme 2007, organized by the Training Division of NHRC, commenced on December 17, 2007 and ended on January 16, 2008. The Secretary General, NHRC Shri Akhil Kumar Jain addressed the inaugural function.
The Commission has been conducting the "Summer Internship Programmes" since 1998, and in 2000 the "Winter Internship Programme" was introduced with a view to spread awareness of human rights issues among university students.
This year the programme covered 102 sessions on various human rights issues including interaction by Hon'ble Chairperson and Members of the commission, State Presentations, Project Work Presentation, Field Visits to SOS children's Village, Faridabad, Tihar Jail, Sulabh International, Social Service Organizations in Delhi, Government Hospital and Railway Stations.
The project report covered issues like Prison, Development and Human Right, Child Rights and Trafficking, Religion and Human Rights, Human Rights Development Index, Farmer suicide, Migrant workers, Fact Finding, Scrutiny of Complaints, Examination of Cases decided by the Commission proposed for the Annual Report of 2007-08, Ranking the States, IT in Human Rights Promotion, Public Helath/Mental Helath/HIV.
The highlight of the 2007 Winter Internship Programme was that the Chairperson Justice Shri S. Rajendra Babu interacted with the interns in small groups. Besides the interns were allowed to observe the proceedings on Kashmiri Pandits' case in the Court Room of the Commission.
Distinguished resources speakers at the Internship included Shri. Gerry Pinto (Butterfly), Shri M.V. Bijulaal (Indian Social Institute), Shri Rajib K. Haldwar (PRAYAS), Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak (Sulabh International), Shri Paul Divakar (NCDHR), Smt. Sunila Singh (Peoples Watch, Tamil Nadu) Shri Mathew Cherian (Help-Age) and Ms. Poonam Natarajan, Chairperson (National Trust for People with Disability).
The interns also had sessions with the Members, Secretary General, Director General (Investigation) Joint Secretary, Chief Co-Ordinator Training, Shri Chamanlal, Honorary Representative, Dr. L. Mishra, Special Rapporteur and Prof. B.B. Pande
In all, 46 interns comprising 19 girls and 27 boys from Andaman & Nicobar, Arunachal Pradesh, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu, Lakshadweep, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi completed their internship.
