Workshop on Human Rights for Delhi University teachers
Forty five Delhi University teachers from various affiliated Colleges underwent training in the area of imparting Human Rights Education at a 2-day workshop jointly organized by the National Human Rights Commission and the Indian Institute of Public Administration in Delhi on 25 and 26 March 2004.
Inaugurating the workshop, Justice Smt. Sujata V. Manohar, Member, NHRC called on the teachers not to restrict themselves to text book teaching but to impart necessary values and ethics to the student community so that they are sensitized to rights of the vulnerable sections of society. She said that it is these very students who later become key players in society as administrators, human rights activists etc. Stating that the Commission has always laid great emphasis on Human Rights education at all levels, Smt. Manohar hoped that the workshop would formulate an effective strategy and develop material on Human Rights suited to the socio-cultural realities of our country.
The teachers who participated in the workshop are those who have been appointed as coordinators for the foundation courses on Human Rights from the colleges affiliated to Delhi University which students may take up parallel to BA, B.Com and B.Sc programmes during their first year starting from the next academic year. This proposal was mooted by UGC as part of its Career Orientation Programme for recognized universities and colleges.
As a long-term plan, the Commission also intends to work with UGC in preparing a model syllabus for the Human Rights Education Programme.
