Workshop on various aspects of police functioning
On the 10th May, 2012, the National Human Rights Commission organized a day long orientation workshop on various aspects of police functioning for its officers in the Investigation Division. Addressing the officers, Dr. Rajiv Sharma, Secretary General said that respect for police forces is eroding in public. Morale of police forces is also declining. This can be set right only by restoring confidence of people in governance. He hoped that sensitization of police officers about various aspects of their functioning may be useful in improving the situation.
Earlier, inaugurating the workshop, Mr. Sunil Krishna, Director General (Investigation) said that it was organized to update knowledge of NHRC's investigation officers, who also come from different police organizations, about the subtle nuances of police functioning. This would help in their investigations into complaints of human rights violations by police.
The thematic issues covered in the workshop included 'Fake Encounters and Human Rights', 'Investigation of Custodial Crimes', 'Torture in Police Custody vis-à-vis Human Rights and 'Gender Sensitization in Police Functioning'.
Two former DIGs of CBI- Mr. O.P. Chhatwal and Mr. M.P. Singh shared their expertise with the participants on these topics. Mr. J.S. Kochher, Joint Secretary (Training), NHRC also addressed the participants who also included students of NHRC's summer internship programme.
