WORLD ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY

WORLD ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY

Given the increasing demographic of ‘Elderly’, the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is observed annually on 15 June. Elder Abuse is a growing concern in India as the joint family is being replaced by the nuclear family system.

The National Human Rights Commission has constituted a ‘Core Group on Disability and Elderly Persons’, wherein Elderly Abuse during the COVID-19 pandemic was made an Agenda item in the latest virtual meeting of the Core Group held on 12th January, 2021. Recommendations regarding Senior Citizens Associations, Constitution of a National Commission, a 24X7 Helpline for helping and directly dealing with issues of senior citizens were made.

The Commission is committed to the protection and promotion of the rights of the elderly, safeguarding those rights against abuse and harassment and shall strive for the same in the future.
