NHRC to hold Camp Sitting at Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh on 6th March, 2024

Pending cases of human rights violations related to the state to be heard

State authorities and the concerned complainants to remain present during the hearing

Andhra Pradesh SHRC Chairperson and Members also to attend the Commission’s meeting

The Commission also to interact with the representatives of civil society, NGOs and human rights defenders followed by a media briefing

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India is holding a one-day Camp Sitting at Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh to hear the pending cases of alleged human rights violations on 6th March, 2024. The NHRC Chairperson, Justice Shri Arun Mishra, Members, Dr. Dnyaneshwar M. Mulay, Shri Rajiv Jain and Smt. Vijaya Bharathi Sayani will start the hearing of the cases from 10.30 A.M. at Police Command Control Centre, Beside R&B Guest House, City Armed Reserve Headquarters, Labbipet, MG Road.

NHRC Secretary General, Shri Bharat Lal, Registrar (Law) Shri Surajit Dey and other senior officers will also be present. Besides the hearing of cases, the Camp Sitting aims to sensitize the State officers about human rights by dispensing speedy justice at their door step in an equitous and friendly ambience. The Commission will also interacts with the representatives of civil society organizations, NGOs and human rights defenders to encourage them to act as eyes and ear of the Commission.

The State authorities and the complainants concerned have been asked to remain present at the hearing of these cases to facilitate on-the-spot deliberations and decisions. Cases such as charging exorbitant fees by college authorities, non-payment of pensionary benefits, forced eviction of tribals, death of sanitation worker, rape of a minor, etc., are likely to be taken up in the open hearing.

After the hearing of the cases, the Commission will meet the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police and other senior officers of Andhra Pradesh for their sensitization about human rights. The Chairperson and Members of the Andhra Pradesh will also participate in the meeting to create enabling environment to preserve protect & promote human rights of citizens in the state.

The Commission will be meeting the representatives of civil society organizations, NGOs and human rights defenders from 2.00-3.15 P.M. at the same venue. Thereafter, at 3.15 P.M.-3.45 P.M. the Commission will brief the media about the outcome of the Camp Sitting to have wider dissemination of information on human rights issues in the State and the actions taken by the Commission.

Such hearings in the Camp Sittings provide a platform for speedy justice to the victims of human rights violations. Starting from the year 2007, the Commission has also held camp sittings in various States including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, Odisha, Gujarat, Assam, Meghalaya, Chhattisgarh, Manipur, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Kerala, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Andaman & Nicobar, Nagaland, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Arunachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.
