NHRC takes suo motu cognizance of collapsing of a building trapping 4-5 men in Gurugram; issues notice to the Chief Secretary, Government of Haryana and Director General, NDRF

The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, India has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that 4-5 men were feared buried as a three-storey building collapsed at Khawaspur in Gurugram district of Haryana on 18th July,2021. Reportedly, the teams from the National Disaster Response Force, NDRF and the local administration were present on the spot and the rescue operation was being carried out.

Expressing concern over the incident, the Commission has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary, Government of Haryana calling for a detailed report in the matter including present status of the incident, number of confirmed casualties and health status of the injured persons. The Commission has also sought a copy of the enquiry report ordered by the Deputy Commissioner, Gurugram in the incident along with the detailed report.

Apart from this, the Commission has also called for a report from the Director General, National Disaster Relief Force regarding the status of the rescue operation and number of victims of the incident. The response from both the authorities is expected within four weeks.

According to the media report, carried on the 19th July, 2021, the structure was located on the premises of a Cargo Company and was being used for the purpose of residence of its employees. One person was, reportedly, rescued and taken to the Civil Hospital for medical treatment. The Additional Divisional Fire Officer was reported as saying that they were not having a confirmed report on how many people were trapped inside.
