NHRC issue notices to the Government of Uttar Pradesh over beating an inmate to death at a drug rehabilitation centre in NOIDA

The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, India has taken suo-motu cognizance of the media report on the death of a 37-year-old man admitted to a drug rehabilitation centre in Sector 112, NOIDA in Gautham Budh Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the media report, if true, amount to a violation of human rights of the victim. Accordingly, it has issued notices to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police calling for a detailed report including the present status of the investigation of the case and compensation of relief, if any, provided to the next of kin of the deceased by the government authorities.
Reportedly, the victim was admitted to the rehabilitation centre on 6th March, 2023. However, on 9th March, the family received a phone call from the centre stating that the victim had fainted due to an epileptic fit, and later, the dead body was sent home in an Ambulance.
