NHRC notice to the Delhi Government on the death of 12 mentally challenged inmates at Asha Kiran Home

New Delhi, the 12th January, 2010

The National Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary, NCT of Delhi calling for a detailed report into the cause of death of inmates of Asha Kiran Home and also on its state of affairs.

The Commission took cognizance of this issue on the 11th January, 2010 on a complaint filed by Prabir Kumar Das, Advocate and Human Rights Activist. Quoting media reports, he had alleged that 12 mentally challenged inmates of Asha Kiran Home, run by the Delhi Government at Rohini, New Delhi died during last one month. Out of this, 3 reportedly died within 24 hours due to lack of basic facilities such as warm clothes. He requested Commission's intervention into the matter.

The Commission has asked the Chief Secretary, NCT of Delhi to submit detailed report in the matter within four weeks from the receipt of the notice.
