NHRC begins its two days Open Hearing & Camp Sitting in Thiruvananthapuram (31.10.2019)

The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, India today began its two days Open Hearing and Camp Sitting in Thiruvananthapuram to consider cases relating to alleged human rights violations in Kerala and Lakshadweep. Inaugurating it, Mr. Justice H.L.Dattu, Chairperson, NHRC said that proactive steps need to be taken to ensure registration of complaints of SC/ST communities as per the provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocity) Act, 1989. He said that the objective of the Camp sitting is to bring the aggrieved persons and the concerned officers of the State Government at one platform to ensure immediate relief to the victims of human rights violations.

The NHRC Chairperson said that the Camp Sittings and Open Hearings have had a significant impact on improving governance by officials more efficiently and impartially. These have also led to increased public awareness of the masses on human rights issues which deal with equality, dignity, life and liberty of the individual.

Justice. Dattu also said that that the Commission was keen to know the initiatives taken by the authorities, particularly with respect to human trafficking, cases of missing women and children etc.

The Commission will take up 96 cases today in the Open hearing relating to the grievances of aggrieved people of Scheduled Caste & Scheduled Tribe communities and the problems they face in seeking justice from government agencies.

On November 1st (Tomorrow), 5 cases shall be taken up in the sitting of Full Commission to be presided over by Justice Dattu. Subsequently, the Commission will hold a meeting with NGOs of Kerala and Lakshadweep on human rights issues at Government Guest House, Thycaud, Thiruvananthapuram.

NHRC Members, Mr. Justice P C Pant, Mrs. Jyotika Kalra, and Dr D M Mulay, Kerala State Human Rights Commission Chairperson, Mr. Justice Antony Dominic, NHRC Secretary General, Mr. Jaideep Govind, Chief Secretary, Kerala, Mr. Tom Jose and Additional Chief Secretary, Dr Vishwas Mehta, among others, attended the inaugural function.
