NHRC team revisits the Shelter Homes at Turkman Gate and finds them in an improved and better condition



New Delhi, 21st December, 2021

The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, India re-visited the Shelter Homes at Turkman Gate to follow up on the visit made by the NHRC Member, Mr. Justice M.M. Kumar on 7th December, 2021.

The team has found considerable improvement in the shelter homes for both men and women. Earlier, the NHRC team had found the Homes in poor infrastructural conditions, dingy and in an unclean situation. Now, the State Government has provided metal cots and mattresses to the inmates.

The NHRC team overall has found improvement in the overall affairs of both the homes. On the follow up visit, the Shelter Homes were found in liveable condition. The Women’s Home now has functional toilets with proper water supply. The level of hygiene and cleanliness was found to be improved. Although, the drinking water has been provided but the supply still needs to be augmented. The problem of overcrowding in the Shelter for women still existed. Both the homes need repair and renovation on an urgent basis.

The Member, Mr. Justice M.M. Kumar has directed the team to submit its report expeditiously. The NHRC team was led by Mr. O.P Vyas, Deputy Registrar (Law), Mr. Sukhdev Singh, Sr. PPS to Member Mr. Justice M.M. Kumar, Mr. Santosh Kumar R., Inspector and Ms. Sakshi Thapar, JRC.
