Two days NHRC Camp Sitting and Public Open Hearing for the cases of Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura begins at Shillong tomorrow

The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, India is organizing its ‘Camp Sitting and Public Open Hearing’ to hear the complaints related to the human rights violations from the three North Eastern States – Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura at State Convention Centre, Hotel Pinewood, Shillong on 14th and 15th December, 2021.
Mr. Justice M.M. Kumar, Member, NHRC will inaugurate it at 10.00 AM on 14th December 2021. NHRC Members Dr. D.M. Mulay and Mr. Rajiv Jain, Secretary General Mr. Bimbadhar Pradhan and other senior officers of the Commission and State Governments will be present.
After the inauguration, 19 cases pertaining to the states of Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura will be taken up in a single sitting. These includes fresh complaints received in response to its public notices for as well as some earlier registered cases in which the requisite reports from the concerned State Authorities have not been received. The cases will be heard in the presence of complainants and concerned public authorities, so that some decisions are taken on the spot for redressal of grievances of the victims of rights violations.
On 15th December, 2021, the Commission will hold a meeting with NGOs and Human Rights Defenders in the forenoon to ascertain the human rights situation and related issues in these three States. Thereafter, the Commission will brief the media about the outcome of the ‘Public Open Hearing and Camp Sitting’.
The Commission has been organizing ‘Open Hearing and Camp Sittings’ in different States of the country since 2007 and has so far held about 40 such sittings and hearings with the objective of quick disposal of cases and to sensitize and create awareness about human rights at the grassroots. Due to COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions, the Commission could not hold any Camp Sitting after the Sitting in Raipur, Chhattisgarh in February, 2020.
