NHRC extends condolences on the death of Sergio de Mello



The National Human Rights Commission has expressed its "profound sorrow" at the tragic loss of life of Mr. Sergio Vieira de Mello, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. In a letter to the Secretary General of the United Nations, Mr. Kofi Annan, the Commission expressed its deepest condolences.
"At painful moments like this, even more so than at other times, the world needs to be inspired by the courageous vision of the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights", the Commission said. "It was these that the High Commissioner and other members of the United Nations family were upholding in Iraq, with such exemplary dedication", the Commission added.
The Commission observed that, all around the world, there is an immense feeling of solidarity with the United Nations at this moment of great pain and loss. The Commission endorsed the words of the UN Secretary General that the work of the World Organization is more indispensable than ever before.
The Commission also conveyed its heartfelt condolences and sympathies to Mrs. Sergio Vieira de Mello and the members of the bereaved family.
