NHRC's Proceedings on Marad Report sought from Chief Secretary, Kerala, on compensation
The National Human Rights Commission has asked the Chief Secretary, Government of Kerala to submit a report within four weeks on the issue of compensation to those who were affected by the incidents in Marad, Kerala, on 2 May 2003. The Commission has also asked the Director General of Police, Government of Kerala to inform it about the status of the case pending in the High Court of Kerala. These directions were issued at a meeting of the Full Commission held on 17 September 2003.
The Commission had earlier taken cognizance of the complaint of Shri T. Suresh, Secretary, Marad Arayasamajam relating to death of eight Hindu fishermen with serious injury to 15 others including one woman allegedly at the hands of assailants belonging to the Muslim community and on 9th July, transmitted a copy of the petition to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, Kerala for a factual report on the allegations contained in it.
The Director General of Police, Kerala, vide his letter dated 27 August 2003, has informed the Commission that investigation of the cases relating to the incident at Marad on 2 May 2003, in which 9 persons were killed and 16 persons injured was entrusted to CBCID and the investigation was supervised by an officer of the rank of Inspector General of Police. The investigation of the case has been completed and charge-sheet filed. The DGP has also informed the Commission that the Hon'ble High Court of Kerala had looked into the need for handing over the investigation to the CBI in this case and has allowed the CBCID of the State Police to complete the investigation.
