Delhi Police to get training in Human Rights

Nearly 40 police officers of Delhi police are to undergo training in Human Rights Investigation, Skills and Custody Management in a 3-day programme to be conducted by the National Human Rights Commission. The programme, which will take place from 3 - 5 March 2004 at the Indian Institute of Public Administration, Delhi will see the participation of police personnel of the rank of SHO, Additional SHO and their supervisory ACPs with adequate representation of women police officers.
The Chief Guest for the inaugural session of the training programme will be Justice Shri Y. Bhaskar Rao, Member, NHRC. Other dignitaries who will be attending the inaugural session will be Dr. P.L. Sanjeev Reddy, Director IIPA, Special Commissioner of Police, Delhi Shri Y.S. Dadwal and Joint Commissioner of Police Shri U.N.B. Rao.
The Commission has since its inception always accorded high priority to training and orientation of police personnel in the human rights field. It believes training is essential as it increases the capacity of the police to react to situations of stress and provocation with greater respect for rights of those involved and in the long run, the image of the police as a peoples' friendly force.
The training programme will aim at promoting among the Law Enforcement Officers, better understanding and knowledge of human rights culture, practices, skills, attitudes and ethos in the context of various international instruments, treaties, the Indian Constitution and legal framework.
