Visit of NHRC Team to Central Prison, Bangalore

Shri P.C. Sharma, Member, NHRC accompanied by the Commission's Special Rapporteur, Shri Chaman Lal visited the Central Prison, Bangalore on 24 February 2006. Shri B.S. Abbai, DIG and senior officials of the Prison accompanied the NHRC team to various sections of the prison, which included convicts' barracks, undertrial prisoner's barracks, factory area, hospital, kitchen and women's prison. Shri Sharma took special interest in ascertaining the problems of undertrial prisoners particularly that of the women prisoners and interacted with a number of them. He was happy to see the performance of the jail factory, which, he felt, still has a lot of untapped potential. In the prison hospital, the NHRC team had a detailed discussion with the psychiatrist incharge about the problems of mentally ill prisoners. Prior to the Member Shri P.C. Sharma, the Special Rapporteur had carried out a detailed study of the Central Prison, Bangalore, District Prison, Bangalore, Open Air Jail, Koramangala and Sub Jail, Chickaballapur.
