NHRC to send a team to UP to investigate alleged attack and rape of Muslim women in a village in Shravasti district



New Delhi July 17, 2007 The National Human Rights Commission will be sending an investigation team to Dhanni Deeh village of Shravasti district in Uttar Pradesh, where hundreds of people are reported to have attacked and beat up Muslims.

The Commission's decision comes after it went through a distressing news that appeared in the "Indian Express" on July 14, 2007. The news report among others, alleged that the village consisting of Muslims was attacked by people belonging to Hindu community on July 10, 2007. The attackers alleged to have been patronized by a Cabinet Minister of the UP Government, also gang raped the women and even paraded them naked. The report also said that no FIR was registered in the incident. It, further, said that the trouble started a few days back when a Muslim youth of the village eloped with a Hindu girl of a nearby village.

The Commission after going through the news report has sent a notice to the Chief Secretary and DGP, Uttar Pradesh, for a factual report within four weeks.
