NHRC'S SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME CONCLUDES<br>

NHRC's month long Summer Internship Programme - 2010 which started on the 17th May concluded on the 16th June.
Addressing a gathering on the occasion, NHRC Chairperson, Mr. Justice K.G. Balakrishnan congratulated the interns and expressed the hope that they would work for the protection and promotion of human rights, and intelligently intervene to ensure justice for those whose human rights are violated.
Justice Balakrishnan said that there are so many problems in our country like inequality, lack of education etc., and that some people don't respect others' rights. Human rights violations are openly committed in some cases while in some others they are secretly manipulated in our society. Sometimes, we are not in a position to react to these situations, but on many occasions we can intervene. He said that instead of remaining silent in the face of human rights violations, it is necessary to react to such violations.
Referring to a point raised by one of the interns about many human rights activists claiming to be working for the protection of human rights, but actually doing nothing, Justice Balakrishnan said that there could be some pseudo human rights activists as well. He said that dissemination of knowledge about protection and promotion of human rights can help in such situations.
NHRC chairperson said that the interns would do well to disseminate knowledge of human rights related issues, attained during their internship, among others.
He also gave them certificates and awards. The award of the best intern was shared by the three interns, Ms. Sarah Dias, Mr. Sukrit Kapoor and Mr. Digvijay Singh Katoch. Forty eight candidates, comprising 26 girls and 22 boys completed internship.
The aim of the internship programme was to sensitise the young students about the various aspects of human rights issues by eminent guest and in-house faculties.
The Training Division of NHRC organised the internship programme.
