NHRC CHAIRPERSON INAUGURATES YMCA MEET IN KERALA<br>

NHRC Chairperson Mr. K.G. Balakrishnan inaugurated the two day YMCA South West India region meeting on the 13th June, 2010 at Khottumugham Camp Centre in Aluva, Kochi, Kerala.
Addressing the participants, he said that the Commission is committed to protecting the rights of children, women and elderly persons. He called upon the youth to be more vigilant about violation of human rights and urged them to alert NHRC on any such
issues.
He appreciated the role of YMCA in moulding the younger generation. Justice Balakrishnan said that the manual scavenging is banned by Law in the country, but despite this, it is being practiced in several states.
He also expressed concern over the increasing incidents of custodial deaths, and said that the Commission will closely monitor whether its guidelines on the issue are being followed properly or not by the public authorities.
