Deaths of pregnant women at a hospital in Jodhpur<br> (Case No.276/20/19/2011) <br>



Media carried reports alleging that in a period of ten days, 12 pregnant women died due to the administration of infected intravenous dextrose and ringer lactose fluids at Umaid Hospital in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.
The reports carried on the 25th February, 2011 also alleged that five other pregnant women were stated to be in a serious condition. The laboratory reports in the women and child wing of the state government run hospital confirmed that several batches of IV fluids were infected. These were manufactured by the Indore based company Parental Surgical India Ltd. and supplied by the Anshul Pharma. Subsequently, an FIR was registered against the concerned companies. A three member panel of doctors was also reported to had been constituted to further probe the cause of deaths.
Taking suo motu cognizance of the media reports, the Commission observed that the contents therein, if true, raise serious issue of violation of human rights of the women, who died due to the negligence of hospital authorities and the state government. Accordingly, a notice was issued to the Chief Secretary, Government of Rajasthan calling for a detailed report in the matter.
