Workshop on NHRI Libraries and Resource Centre Management in Malaysia<br>

Mr. Jaimini Kumar Srivastava, Information & Public Relations Officer, NHRC attended a workshop on "National Human Rights Institutions Library and Resource Centre Management" held at Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia from 26th-30th June, 2012. It was organised by the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, (RWI), Sweden in collaboration with the Asia Pacific fourm, (APF), the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) and the Swedish Intenational Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). The workshop provided an opportunity to share the best practices among the NHRIs of Asia Pacific Region and explore the possibilities of developing the NHRIs libraries as resource centres rather than just as a traditional library. During the discussions, it was felt that possibilities should be explored to share the available material or information with the NHRI libraries through net connectivity among them. It was also advocated that NHRI libraries should maintain records of various documents concerning activities of NHRIs in electronic form and the role of librarian should be more of a person who is up to date with information on various issues of human rights and maintains it in a user friendly manner. The workshop also provided an opportunity to the participants to visit SUHAKAM, the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia. Various human rights issues including activities and functioning of different NHRIs came up during the discussions, and NHRC-India's library with its over 20000 books and its impressive work in the field of protection and promotion of human rights was appreciated. The workshop was attended by the participants from 12 countries.
