NHRC issues notices in two incidents of corporal punishment reported in Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of two media reports alleging brutal treatment given to small school going boys by their teachers in Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
Nine year old boy and a student of Ushodaya Merit School in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh annoyed his lady teacher for not covering his books properly so much so that she allegedly beat him up with a stick on his left hand which already had an iron rod due to a prior fracture resulting in serious injuries.
In yet another incident, ten year old Aslam Ansari, a Class IV student of a Government Primary School at Pathakheda in Betul District of Madhya Pradesh was beaten up brutally by his two teachers when he failed to satisfy them that he had not broken a bucket in the school. The boy succumbed to serious injuries caused to his backbone and neck.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the press reports, if true, raise the serious issue of violation of human rights of the students.
In the case of Andhra boy, notices have been issued to the Secretary (Education), Government of Andhra Pradesh and Superintendent of Police, East Godavari of the State calling for a report.
In the case of Madhya Pradesh incident, the Principle Secretary, School Education and Superintendent of Police, Betul have been issued notices by the Commission.
All the concerned authorities have been given four weeks time to submit a report.
