NHRC notice to Government of Bihar on allegations of supply of sub-standard medicines in Government Hospitals (24.9.2014)

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that a patient died during operation in the Bhagalpur Medical College Hospital due to sub-standard medicines supplied by the Bihar Medical Services and Infrastructure Corporation Limited (BMSICL).
According to the media report, carried on the 11th September, 2014, the patient, names Arvind kan, resident of Belhar, Banka, Bihar was admitted in the hospital for operation. He died during the operation on the 21st May, 2014.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the newspaper report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the patients in general and the deceased in particular. Accordingly, notices have been issued to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, Government of Bihar calling for reports within four weeks.
