Chairperson's visit to Ambala Central Jail




The Chairperson, Dr. Justice A.S. Anand, accompanied by Shri Chaman Lal, Special Rapporteur inspected the Central Jail, Ambala, Haryana on 18 October 2003. The Chairperson expressed concern over the fact that there was no female doctor in the jail though there were 111 female prisoners. He also underlined the need for a psychiatrist. He asked the authorities to take necessary action to reduce overcrowding. He directed the jail authorities to prepare a proposal for vocational training of female prisoners. "The prisons must be treated as nurseries for reformation", he emphasized. He also stressed the need to set up a State Human Rights Commission in Haryana.
