Collapse of a building in East Delhi <br> (Case No. 5336/30/0/2010)<br>



The Commission took suo motu cognizance of media reports on the collapse of a building on the 15th November, 2010 at Lalita Park, Laxmi Nagar in East Delhi. The incident claimed more than 67 lives.
The reports alleged that no MCD official was willing to comment on how illegal floors were allowed to be constructed in the building which collapsed. The MCD had no record.
The Commission observed on the 19th November, 2010 that the contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the people, who died in the incident.
Notices were issued to the Chief Secretary, Govt. of NCT of Delhi and the Commissioner, Municipal Corporation of Delhi calling fo their reports in the matter with specific reference to the following points:-
1. Action against the erring public officials responsible for construction of such illegal buildings;
2. Action to be taken for the safety of the persons living in the 38 unsafe buildings, as identified by the MCD;
3. Action to be taken for the medical treatment of the injured including ex-gratia payment to the next of kin of the deceased.
